Listening to podcasts is a way to entertain yourself, keep yourself informed, and hear from people you wouldn?t otherwise hear from, and more and more people are starting to publish them. In this workshop, we will talk about different kinds of podcasts, what makes a good podcast, and go over the basics of recording and editing a podcast episode using Hindenburg Journalist, and publishing a podcast using a service like ShoutEngine, Libsyn, or Podbean. It?s recommended that you listen to at least one podcast before starting this class.

Come Equipped with your DSLR camera and get set to learn it like the back of your hand. After this class you'll feel confident using your DSLR, and capture those pictures you've been wanting. Weather permitting, we'll go on a photo walk around downtown Providence.

Wide Open Spaces follows in the tradition of groups like Claire Lynch and the Punch Brothers, who use bluegrass instrumentation to play a wide range of music. Their ?bluegrass without borders? will take you to Caribbean islands, California gold country, Celtic ceilidhs and the Kentucky hills.

Combining the traditional sounds of fiddle, banjo, mandolin, guitar and bass with modern song-writing, jazzy rock-edged arrangements and tight three-part harmonies, they take audiences on a musical joy ride that has some people saying: "I can't believe that's bluegrass!"

Anything can happen - and usually does.

The 'Spaces' are comprised of former members of the newgrass stew pot known as Acoustic Planet, the bluegrass wunderkinds The Oakhurst Boys, along with Mud Rocheleau-Demers of the famed acoustic duo, Chuck and Mud. Whether you prefer wild Celtic fiddle reels, rockin' guitar solos, banjos from the far side of a distant galaxy, Beatle-esque and Alison Krauss style harmonies - or original songs sometimes reminiscent of Jimmy Buffet, the Punch Brothers, or Doyle Lawson - come join the Spaces for an evening of good-humored, ?spaced?-out musical adventure.

Fine detail and embossment make for stunning, professional-quality business cards, invitations, announcements and labels. Print your favorite poem by hand-setting lead type one letter at a time; make a poster or a broadside with wood type; transfer your line drawings to photo-polymer plate for editioning. This course will cover the old and new uses of the letterpress, from lead to polymer type and linotype printing plate including basic prep file using Adobe software.

You will leave this three-week course with a working knowledge of press operation including: inking the press, pressure and roller height adjusting, registration, feeding paper through the press and cleaning the press.

Class 1: Introduction to letterpress, movable set type, and print
Class 2: Create polymer plates and print
Class 3: Guided workshop

Participants must attend ALL THREE letterpress classes in order to be certified to use the letterpress at AS220 Industries.

Situated in the hills of Eastern Kentucky, there is a small town of Belcher. Listen closely and you might hear what is first thought to be the angels singing. It is the sweet, crystal clear, high tenor voice of Belcher?s own multi-talented son of Bluegrass. Add in his powerful and precise Mandolin, a few licks of his Guitar, Banjo, Bass and Dobro, you have the complete package of Kevin Prater. Kevin began his musical voyage at the age of four. Encouraged and mentored by his Uncle and biggest fan, Boone Estep. At age 10, he formed his first band Elkhorn Grass. Elkhorn Grass toured for eleven years, then becoming the house band for Dollywood. Now, over thirty years later, Kevin has traveled millions of miles, played in 49 States and 23 countries. Kevin has moved from being one of the best sidemen in Bluegrass to leading his own talented and unique band, from the hills of Appalachia, creating that Pure Kentucky Sound of the The Kevin Prater Band.

The Kevin Prater Band grew from a long musical association between Kevin Prater and Tom Timberlake. Beginning with the Timmy Cline Band in 1994 and continuing with Redwing in later years. Years into Kevin's tenure with The James King Band, Tom began encouraging Kevin to do his own music, with his own band. Tom's persistence paid off. He put the fire under Kevin to pursue his dream of fronting his own band. Soon they were forming The Kevin Prater Band. They started picking together again and working on new music with a couple of local musicians, playing their first show as "The Kevin Prater Band" in 2009. Kevin has been blessed to showcase his many talents through out his amazing career. His solid rythmn and lead is a driving force of the KPB sound. His vocals are the backbone of the group, which the music is built around. Kevin has surrounded himself with veterans of Bluegrass Music, enabling them to create their unique style of Bluegrass and Gospel Music they are quickly becoming famous for.

Danny Stiltner, is one of the most talented bass players in eastern Kentucky. Danny and Kevin have known each other since childhood, when they used to play local shows around their area. They always said they would love to play together in a band, but didn't know so many years would go by before it would come to pass. Danny is carrying on a legacy started by his father Blake Stiltner. Danny also contributes to the band vocally.

Tom Timberlake, Is multi-talented playing banjo and guitar and singing harmony and lead vocals. Tom knows how to accent the vocals and other instruments and make them truly shine. His harmonies are second to none. He goes out on a limb to make everything work perfectly in the band.

Adam Burrows, Is a highly talented, gentle giant, until he picks up that fiddle. Fans are amazed at his high energy and ability to dance and tap and the same time he is playing. His love of traditional Bluegrass Music is proven in his ever present smile. Adam has great stage presence, learned at an early age. He has toured and filled in with many great bands including Lonesome Will Mullins, The Burrows Brothers, Kody Norris and many others. Adam also plays Bass, Guitar and other instruments. He contributes to the band vocally as well.

Jake Burrows, Brother to Adam Burrows, additionally comes to the band at a young age, but a strong resume. Jake plays Banjo and Dobro for the KPB and plays many other instruments as well. Since a young age he has filled in and toured with many great names of Bluegrass. Jake adds his incredible high tenor vocals to enhance the traditional sound of the band.

The Kevin Prater Band sound comes from a wide range of influences and musical heroes. The Original Seldom Scene, The Country Gentlemen, Osborne Brothers, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Red Allen, The Stanley Brothers, Boone Estep & The Ramblin Grass are among the different styles of music they have all admired and studied together throughout the years. Also steeped in the tradition of Gospel music, they pride themselves on the a capella hymns and great gospel songs that people have come to enjoy. The band also includes Classic Country and Vintage Rock in their repertoire, insuring no two shows of The Kevin Prater Band are the same.

In this three week workshop, we will explore the recording process at AS220 Industries' media lab and editing suite, available for public use upon completion of this workshop. By the end, you'll gain skills to setup, record, edit, and export projects.

This workshop is intended for media artists, actors, narrators, singers, and podcasters who want to make quality recordings on a low budget in their homes or in our community space. We'll balance theoretical concepts with practical techniques to help you approach your future projects.

Basic computer skills are required, and general understanding of audio is helpful, but not necessary. We use Apple's Garageband software as well as Reaper, a free software like Audacity (but better!) available for Mac and PC. We have seven workstations in the media lab and a private editing suite with up to date equipment and software. Students who wish to use their laptops should have Garageband or Reaper software downloaded and up to date.
