Fresh off of her American Music Abroad tour throughout Central America where she served as a musical ambassador for The United States, Maimouna Youssef aka Mumu Fresh is ready to share her latest musical creations with the world. Baltimore born, and DC raised, with a name and presence that makes you wonder ?what part of the world is she from?? Maimouna Youssef is a global citizen, a musical healer, a cultural philanthropist and a community pillar.

Since receiving a GRAMMY-Nomination for her vocal contribution to The Roots hit ?Don?t Feel Right? in 2007, the singer, emcee, songwriter, activist, mentor and workshop facilitator has been making waves in the international Indie music scene as a solo and accompanying artist.

Maimouna Youssef has shared stages with music giants such as Sting, Nas, Common, Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, Ed Sheeran, Queen Latifah, Bobby Mcferrin, Jill Scott, D?Angelo, Aloe Blacc, Bruno Mars, Jussie Smollett, Fred Yonnet, Dave Chappelle, Yasiin Bey, Angelique Kidjo, Lalah Hathaway, Femi Kuti, and more. This Duke Ellington School of The Arts graduate has a discography that spans from 2006 to present day with 6 solo and group projects under her belt. She released her highly anticipated and widely praised first full-length solo album, ?The Blooming,? in September 2011. The leading single ?I Got A Man? produced by award winning DJ Jazzy Jeff went on to become selected as the theme music to BET?s original series Being Mary Jane. In 2016 Maimouna recorded a full-length project with GRAMMY Award Winning producer 9th Wonder and The Soul Council and most recently in 2017 she released another full-length album with producer and Musical Director for J. Cole, DJ Dummy the Genius. The 17-track all original album entitled Vintage Babies featuring TDE?s SIR, Common, Malik Yusef and Ra Brown is already making its mark on the international music scene with its single ?Shine Your Light? placing at number 6 on UK Indie music charts. In the same year she teamed back up with DJ Jazzy Jeff to lend her vocals and penmanship to his group project ?Chasing Goosebumps? by The Playlist featuring Glenn Lewis.

Dummy is an unlikely name for a mastermind, but don?t be fooled by the name. This Battle, Club and renowned Concert DJ who adds Musical Director and Producer to his resume hails from Brooklyn, New York. Growing up, the DJ influence was always around, watching and listening to both his father and brother DJ. This early exposure sparked his love of music, and by the tender age of 7 he had his hands on the turntables.

Tracyanne & Danny is a new collaborative project between singer-songwriters Tracyanne Campbell (Camera Obscura) and Danny Coughlan (Crybaby).

Tracyanne hails from Glasgow, Scotland. London-born Danny is based in Bristol, England. Their paths first crossed in 2013 when introduced by mutual music industry pals. Tracyanne dug Danny?s Crybaby album (released on Helium Records) and invited him to open some Camera Obscura shows in the UK. Mutual artistic respect led to the swapping of song ideas, but tentative plans to work together were set aside while Camera Obscura wrote, recorded, released, and promoted their fifth album Desire Lines. Following the death of Camera Obscura?s Carey Lander, all band activity stopped. Time passed.

Tracyanne and Danny revisited the idea of collaborating. A pool of songs were honed and crafted. On the suggestion of their manager (and Teenage Fanclub drummer) Francis Macdonald, they recorded at Clashnarrow, a studio in Helmsdale in the highlands of Scotland owned by the esteemed Edwyn Collins. Sessions took place throughout 2016 and 2017. Edwyn co-produced along with engineer and multi-instrumentalist Sean Read (Dexys). They had the use of Edwyn?s vintage gear (including the guitar pedal which features on his global hit ?A Girl Like You?) as they invoked a range of shared influences: The Roches, Dion, Lou Reed, The Flamingos, Serge Gainsbourg, Santo & Johnny, and The Style Council. Edywn pops up with a guest vocal on first single ?Alabama,? an intentionally ?joyous? tribute to Tracyanne?s late friend and band mate Carey Lander.

Tracyanne & Danny is not a diverting curio or a wee stop on the road to someplace else. It is a shared artistic aesthetic, forged over time. They have figured out how to fit round each other and work together, creating a rewarding musical synergy. There will be more songs. Meanwhile, they are looking forward to releasing and promoting the first fruits of their labors with live shows throughout UK, Europe, North America, and beyond.

COLD CAVE

Cold Cave is the electronic music of acclaimed musician, writer and artist Wesley Eisold. Beginning in 2007, Cold Cave has become a name synonymous with the contemporary resurgence of Darkwave and Synth Pop sub-genres, propelling Cold Cave to perform at world class museums The Getty and the Guggenheim, as well as performances with legends Sonic Youth, The Jesus and Mary Chain, among others. The sound has spanned from experimental industrial noise to rock'n'roll influenced electronic music.

According to the Guardian, "Wesley Eisold is an absolutely new, young god of nihilism and despair ? he brilliantly captures Cold Cave's aesthetic: the Morrissey of How Soon Is Now wailing over Nitzer Ebb beats and New Order melodies."

According to Eisold, if anything, his music reflects what it feels like to live in the present. Eisold, whose baritone is as rich and resonating as that of Phil Oakey, Nick Cave or Iggy Pop, says "Of course we love the lineage of the genre, early experiments with machines to convey human emotion; the marriage between pop and industrial music. At the time it was documenting the early stages of a new world, and we are recording what it feels like to be alive in that world."

Amanda Anne Platt & The Honeycutters are on tour with their latest album, a self-titled disc released June 9, 2017 on Organic Records. Lyrically driven, the songs of Amanda Anne Platt & The Honeycutters blend the band?s old-school country roots attitude with their shared influences of rock and folk. Based in Asheville, North Carolina, Amanda is a storyteller by nature with an incredible band backing her. Performing along with Amanda Anne Platt, The Honeycutters are Matt Smith on pedal steel and guitar, Rick Cooper on bass, Josh Milligan on drums and harmony vocals, and Evan Martin on keys and guitar.

There is an empathetic and charming wit ingrained in Amanda?s songwriting. She has a knack for accessing a deep well of emotion and applying it to her story-telling, whether she is writing from her own experiences or immersing herself into the melody of emotions in another person's life.

?She?s soothing (even in the hurtin? songs) and sobering (except for the drinkin? songs) and nuanced in a way that I think tops even those rather famous ladies of the moment named Margo and Kacey? Formed in Haledon NJ in 1976, The Feelies released 4 albums- including their critically acclaimed and influential debut Crazy Rhythms, which was voted 49 in the top 100 albums of the 1980s by Rolling Stone magazine and chosen by Spin Magazine as 49 of the best alternative records of all time. Supporting the release of their first four albums the band appeared on the The Late Show With David Letterman and in concerts with The Patti Smith Group, REM, and Bob Dylan as well as touring with Lou Reed. The twin-guitar attack of songwriters and founders Glenn Mercer and Bill Million is the infectious sound of the group. Paired with driving drums and percussion, it has left an indelible mark on the landscape of rock and roll.

In 2008, the Feelies re-united to open for long time admirers Sonic Youth at Battery Park and then resurrected their tradition of playing low key gigs at strategic intervals throughout the year rather than doing lengthy tours. In 2009 Bar/None re-issued Crazy Rhythms and The Good Earth, this being the first band-sanctioned CD release of the former. In 2011, they released a new studio album Here Before.

In March 2016, Bar/None Records re-released the third and fourth albums, Only Life and Time for a Witness. As a special Record Store Day release Bar None/Coyote Records will co-release the Feelies Uncovered. This will be a limited edition 12 ? EP featuring studio recordings of four cover songs, none commercially available before. In addition, the Feelies recently wrapped up work on a brand new studio album, expected to be released later this year.

They continue to regularly perform live. Their music has been featured in the films Married to the Mob, Something Wild, Prelude to a Kiss, The Truth About Charlie, The Squid & the Whale and Ricki and the Flash.

Talking Dreads is the brainchild of Head Dread, Mystic Bowie, a Jamaican artist whose long and close relationship with Chris Franz and Tina Weymouth, founding members of Talking Heads and Tom Tom Club, began when he joined the latter group as a singer in 1996. He then recorded and performed with Tom Tom Club for nearly twenty years and continues to bear fruit from their unending collaborations.

?Rock and roll is sort of my consolation prize for wanting to have been a writer,? says James Alex. It?s a humble admission from the frontman of Philadelphia?s Beach Slang, a fiery punk quartet whose raucous gigs often find the songwriter?s earnest lyrics bellowed back at him. Still, consider it a feat that fans are even able to hear those words from behind the trembling walls of distortion that serve as Beach Slang?s raison d?etre. Everything about Beach Slang is loud, from the guitars to its attitude to Alex?s weathered rasp.

Considering that, there?s something almost cheeky about the title of his new project: Quiet Slang. As the name implies, Alex is embracing minimalism, smothering the fuzz in favor of a cello, a piano, and his voice. In October, Quiet Slang released We Were Babies & We Were Dirtbags, an EP comprised of two Beach Slang songs and two covers from The Replacements and Big Star. Consider it an introduction to what Alex calls ?chamber pop for outsiders,? because it simply serves as prelude to Everything Matters But No One Is Listening, a collection of 10 Beach Slang covers that comprises Quiet Slang?s debut fulllength.

The project?s seeds were planted just six months after Beach Slang?s formation, when Alex was asked to a solo Tiny Desk Concert for NPR. ?That was just me, my guitar and a clumsy excuse for charm. But, yeah, the response was beautifully unexpected and really nudged my thinking,? he says. ?Even now, at almost every show we play somebody?s like, ?I got turned onto your band from that NPR thing. You should make a record like that.?? A successful solo tour last year solidified the idea in Alex?s mind, but he says he wasn?t content to make a ?campfire record,? elaborating that he ?wanted it to have more weight than that.?

That?s when he turned to the project?s key influence: The Magnetic Fields? Stephin Merritt. Merritt?s influence lent itself not only in his heartrending use of cello and piano via his work with the Fields, but also in one of his most famous lyrics. ?Why do we keep shrieking/ When we mean soft things?? goes the final lines of ?100,000 Fireflies.? ?We should be whispering all the time.?

?That just always stuck with me,? Alex says, ?how quiet can sometimes be more powerful.? He continues, ?If Beach Slang is me fawning over The Replacements, Quiet Slang is me head-over-heels for Stephin Merritt.?

Though a new Beach Slang record is next up on Alex?s docket, he?s open to the possibility of more Quiet Slang. The project?s sophomore release, he notes, would contain original songs. ?I guess I wanted to chase reinterpretation first. I dug the challenge of it. But, yeah, Quiet Slang deserves its own voice.?

Regardless of its future, however, he hopes the project can convey one simple thing: ?Tenderness. I suppose that sounds overly simplified. But, still, it makes it no less sincere. Look, I?m trying to soften the world a little bit?there?s worse ways to be remembered.?

Snail Mail at The Pinhook

Snail Mail, the moniker of 18-year-old Lindsey Jordan, will release its full-length debut in 2018, following the 2016 release of its introductory EP, Habit. The Baltimore singer, songwriter, and guitar prodigy is the latest addition to the renowned Matador Records roster, having bowled them over with her powerhouse vocals, preternaturally wise lyrics, and mind-bogglingly technical compositions.

Snail Mail?s Habit EP was quickly noticed by both national press outlets and touring bands alike, landing Jordan the kind of attention that most of Mary Timony?s guitar students (yes, for real, she?s been classically trained for over thirteen years AND studied under fellow Matador guitar wiz Timony, while also juggling hockey practice) can only dream of?a New York Times Sunday Arts cover, a Pitchfork Rising feature, a FADER Gen F feature, a spotlight in V Magazine, and tours with Girlpool, Priests, and Waxahatchee.

Having been the subject and willing conspirator of many intentional lies planted in Sonic Youth bios over the years, I know first hand the way album lore can bend reality to its truth. After the infamous Byron Coley originated the SY ?Trilogy? myth in the Murray Street bio, we had no choice but to fulfill those expectations with Sonic Nurse. ?Why did you decide to make a trilogy?? was always the first question asked in interviews around that time.

But this is Kurt Vile?s bio, and I wont do that to him. Anyway, Kurt does his own myth making; a boy/man with an old soul voice in the age of digital everything becoming something else, which is why this focused, brilliantly clear and seemingly candid record is a breath of fresh air. Recorded and mixed in a number of locations, including Los Angeles and Joshua Tree, b?lieve i?m goin down? is a handshake across the country, east to west coast, thru the dustbowl history (?valley of ashes?) of woody honest strait forward talk guthrie, and a cali canyon dead still nite floating in a nearly waterless landscape. The record is all air, weightless, bodyless, but grounded in convincing authenticity, in the best version of singer songwriter upcycling. In Kurt?s words, ?I wanted to get back into the habit of writing a sad song on my couch, with nobody waiting on me. I really wanted it to sound like it?s on my couch ? not in a lo-fi way, just more unguarded and vulnerable.?

For a record that plays like a cohesive acoustic experience, its musicality marks Kurt?s departure from an electric guitar experience to include a range of instrumentation with a large group of players. From the banjo he plays on ?I?m an Outlaw? to the piano and lapsteel on ?Life Like This,? and the myriad other instruments on other songs, including farfisa, resonator, arps, horns and synth, one never thinks about what exactly yr listening to as it all serves the song.??The heart of the record is ?Stand Inside.? The music is quiet and the melody, like a hymn, folds in on itself, and embraces full strength in a sexy, floating forcelessness that slowly gathers into a wave that doesn?t go where you think it will or rather gives in to itself and celebrates a man willing to be defined by a woman and his love for her as witness to each other?s lives? Don?t stand by my side, stand inside gives up roleplaying for true exposure and vulnerability.
