TART. Inaugural production of The BAND Group
Bryant Lake Bowl & Theater
810 W Lake St, Minneapolis, MN, 55408
The BAND Group, a new Twin Cities-based theatrical company devoted to supporting other nonprofits, is pleased to announce its first production: TART, a modern retelling of Molière?s iconic French comedy Tartuffe adapted and directed by Adrian Lopez-Balbontin playing Jun. 1-16 at Bryant-Lake Bowl in Minneapolis.
Considered one of the greatest stage comedies of all time, Tartuffe, ou l'Imposteur (Tartuffe, or The Impostor) tells the story of the titular character?s false piety and the havok he wreaks on the gullible nobleman Orgon and his family. For this production, adapter and director Adrian Lopez-Balbontin has reset the action from Orgon?s stately home in 17th Century France to backstage at his gay nightclub in the present day; where Orgon?s family of friends, lovers, and drag performers unite to try and save him from the ?salvation? offered by the moral crusader Tartuffe. TART is a shockingly funny yet serious examination of hypocrisy in all its forms and a parable on the dangers of externalized and internalized oppression; all within a dazzling package of slapstick comedy and drag numbers.
As part of The BAND Group?s mission of bringing awareness, exposure, and financial support to other non-profit organizations, this inaugural production will be partnering with RECLAIM Twin Cities. RECLAIM works to increase access to mental health support to queer and trans youth who are marginalized because of their gender identity, gender expression, and/or sexual orientation so they may reclaim their lives from oppression in all its forms. Additionally, RECLAIM strives to change the landscape of access to care for queer and trans youth through deep practitioner development, training, education and outreach, and community partnerships at the intersection of gender and racial justice.
