"All of these songs are dedicated to someone," says Garrett. "And the 'seeds' have been planted, directly or indirectly, by people who have been instrumental in my development."With Seeds From The Underground Garrett has crafted a project that offers his appreciation while always making the listener aware of his band's skillful approach to melody, harmony and rhythm. From personal nods such as the opening track "Boogety Boogety," dedicated to his memory of watching western films with his father (the title refers to the sound of a galloping horse); "Wiggins," which references his high school band director Bill Wiggins; and "Detroit," an evocative, reflective composition about his hometown, and a celebration of mentor Marcus Belgrave; to his appreciation of some of his musical heroes on "J Mac" (Jackie McLean); "Haynes Here" (Roy Haynes); and "Do Wo Mo" (Duke Ellington, Woody Shaw and Thelonious Monk).Melody, as a matter of fact, was a key element for the saxophonist when writing for the recording. "I wanted to focus on the melody," Garrett reflects. "I want people to remember what the melody is before we start improvising...and on some songs I heard voices, the singing of the melody." This latter point is in evidence on the selections "Haynes Here," "Detroit" and "Welcome Earth Song."

Sean Tillmann has been making records under the name "Har Mar Superstar" since 1999. Under the Har Mar moniker, Sean has gone through a plethora of phases, ranging from fun- loving, beats-based music pioneer (he and Peaches shared stages early on) to angry arena crowd opener (a 2002 public lewdness allegation proves it) to soul music crooner. His last album Bye Bye 17 opened a lot of people's minds to his songwriting prowess, which has existed since day one of his career. For years, Tillmann was an artist's artist when The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Gossip, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and many other legends decided to collaborate and/or take him on tour. Different phases of his career brought him fame through the fickle worlds of indie, British pop, LA DJ-dom, and New York night crawling. Bye Bye 17 was an eye-opener to the music world, not that Tillmann wasn't used to accolades through his former work with Sean Na Na, Gayngs, Neon Neon, and Calvin Krime. Sean had "arrived as a songwriter." After living in LA and NYC for 12 years, Sean moved back to Minneapolis, MN, where he is most creative. With the help of Chris Bierden (Polia, Bye Bye 17), Ryan McMahon (Har Mar, Lizzo), Matt Sweeney (Chavez, Adele, Neil Diamond, Johnny Cash, Cat Stevens), and Ryan Olson (Polia, Marijuana Deathsquads), Har Mar Superstar's album Best Summer Ever was born. Best Summer Ever, since its inception, has been imagined as a "Greatest Hits of Har Mar Superstar from 1950-1985." Tillmann was born in 1978. Wrap your head around that, please. Best Summer Ever is a slow burner with many ballads, dance-able tracks, and co-writes. Long- time friend Julian Casablancas (Cult Records founder, The Strokes), Shawn Everett (Alabama Shakes, Erykah Badu, Voidz, Weezer), and Tillmann worked very closely to make the concept happen. Karen O, Matt Sweeney, and James Levy (Reputante, Lolawolf) all helped write songs on the record. Bobby Charles wrote "I Hope." "Youth Without Love" was a demo written by Julian that was sitting around that Har Mar fell in love with, so they made it for the record. The newest member to the all-star unit is saxophonist Andy Snitzer, who like Lorber (and the Brecker Brothers) hails from Cheltenham, PA. Lorber states, "Andy's got a perfect approach. It's soulful and melodic and he is not afraid of taking the music outside a bit." Prototype also features special guests bassist Nathan East, guitarists Chuck Loeb, Larry Koonse and Paul Jackson, Jr. and saxophonist Dave Mann, among others. "Writing is something that I really enjoy and I'm always coming up with ideas to work on," states Jeff Lorber, who penned nine of the tracks on Prototype and co-wrote one with Jimmy Haslip. "We put a lot of work, love and care into this record. I hope that everyone who hears it enjoys listening to it as much as we enjoyed writing and recording it. I think it's the kind of record that will reap dividends by repeated listening because there's a lot of great playing that you can only appreciate by really getting into it and checking out all the details."
