We welcome back Andrew Marlin and Emily Frantz, who form the Chapel Hill?based folk duo Mandolin Orange.

The website All Music says Mandolin Orange draws ?from wells both old and new, offering up a heady mix of bluegrass, gospel, folk, country, and pop that invokes the earthy timelessness (and effortless harmonies) of Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, the sweet unpredictability of Nickel Creek, and the rich, gothic Americana of The Civil Wars.?

The duo?s 2013 album This Side of Jordan was named by NPR Music as one of the year?s top 10 folk and Americana albums. Ever since they?ve been building a devoted following, performing on big stages at Bonnaroo and Colorado?s Red Rocks Amphitheater, and opening for the Avett Brothers? 2017 New Year?s Eve show at PNC Arena. Their most recent release, Blindfaller, features a full-band sound and has garnered praise from critics throughout the land.

Shovels and Rope is the remarkable duo of Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst, partners in life as well as in music, who?ve built a national following with their signature blend of acoustic guitars, drums, and vocals. The Charleston, S.C., couple broke through with their 2012 album O? Be Joyful, which earned them ?Best Emerging Artist? at the Americana Music Awards and a slot on the Late Show with David Letterman. PopMatters calls the group ?the most exciting act in Americana in recent years.? Their fifth album, Little Seeds (New West Records, 2016), is ?the strongest piece of record-making Shovels and Rope has delivered to date,? says All Music Guide.

Alt-country pioneer Son Volt is the creation of singer-songwriter-guitarist Jay Farrar, who formed the band 25 years ago after the breakup of Uncle Tupelo, the band he cofounded with Jeff Tweedy of Wilco fame. Son Volt?s 1995 album Trace is a masterpiece and was expanded and remastered by Rhino Records for a 20th-anniversary reissue. The band recently released a fine album of classic blues called Notes of Blue.
