The word resurrection invokes the act of rising again, the possibility of revival despite opposing circumstances. There is no better for the title of New Found Glory?s eighth album. The collection of songs, produced by the band and engineered by Paul Miner, reflects four musicians determined to overcome no matter the odds. The Florida band, who have been creating infectious pop-punk since 1997, has learned to embrace the struggle and allow it to spawn a new beginning, opening a chapter where New Found Glory is stronger and more unstoppable than ever.

Following the release and promotion of 2011?s notably successful album Radiosurgery, New Found Glory found themselves pared down to a four-piece. With this new tightened lineup, the musicians were interested in creating a new album that embraced the combined sound of four instruments. They went back and listened to some of their favorite records to seek inspiration, studying how four musicians can build the same level of anthemic sound as if there were more. ?The goal for the new record was to make it sound really authentic and natural and not filled in,? Chad says. ?It was trying to make the biggest sounding record stripped down as four people.?

The musicians, who live split between Florida and Southern California, began writing in early 2014. They were interested in expanding beyond the recurring themes of relationships that often pops up in New Found Glory lyrics. For Jordan, Resurrection is an expression of the overall human experience and what it means to take the cards you?re dealt and move on in a positive way. ?We?ve always a been a band that has written about life experiences from a deeply personal place,? Jordan says. ?Some of it fictitious and some of it not fictional, but it?s all been stuff we?ve dealt with in our lives.?

The songs on the album were recorded in Miner?s studio in Orange Country in the summer of 2014 over the course of a month. The process marks the first time New Found Glory has gone into the studio with all the songs written and prepared. The band elected to produce the music themselves as a way of showcasing their independence and confidence in the band. Chad, who has produced albums for A Day To Remember, Lisa Loeb, as well as others, brought that experience to the process. It was a notably stress-free experience that resulted in a boisterous, infectious album that aptly balances polished hooks with a raw punk rock edge. ?This is the most prepared we?ve ever been,? Chad notes. ?Writing as a band now has never felt so easy. We really came together with ideas. We?ve gone through a lot and figured a lot of things out. This album has been very cathartic for us.?

?Selfless,? the album?s rollicking opener, sets the tone for Resurrection. The song is grand and driving, revealing how big four instruments can sound together. ?We?ve been through ups


and downs,? Jordan explains of the song. ?At the end of the day, it?s how you are as a person and how people view you as a person.? The album?s title track features Terror?s Scott Vogel on guest vocals and, in many ways, uses its catchy chorus to sum up the band?s experience over the past few years. Bayside?s Anthony Raneri pops up on rock-heavy ?Stubborn? and Turnstile?s Brendan Yates appears on propulsive album closer ?On My Own.?

One of the album?s standout moments arrives on ?Ready and Willing,? an immediate number that grapples with the idea of struggling against the odds. The song reminds the listener that if they have a dream they should pursue it no matter what, always remembering why you had that dream to begin with. ?It?s about trying to find that feeling again that you had as a kid,? Chad says. ?You have to know why you do it. We want to challenge our fans to one day do the same thing.?

For New Found Glory, it?s eternally important to remember why they do what they do. The band has been playing together since the musicians were only in high school, breaking out of Florida to become one of the most influential pop-punk bands of our time. The group has headlined Warped Tour, toured with Green Day and performed on the mainstage of festivals like Reading and Leeds, their songs connecting positively and universally with fans around the world. Their message of encouragement continually resonates: never settle for what life has dealt you because you can do better. It?s that passion and optimism that has kept New Found Glory together for all these years and all these albums and all these tours.

?Bands have a lot of different reasons for being bands, but we are 100 percent in this band for the music,? Chad says. ?All my life, this was my passion. That?s true for all of us. That?s why we still do it. We love writing and playing songs so we?ll do whatever it takes to make that happen. A Hawk and A Hacksaw began in 2000 in the small town of Saumur, France. Initially a solo vehicle for Neutral Milk Hotel drummer Jeremy Barnes, the main impetus of the project was to focus on the gray areas in borders of music and geography. Barnes met violinist Heather Trost in 2004 and the band became a duo.

Forest Bathing, their new album, features ten original compositions. The Persian Santur, an ancient type of dulcimer struck by sticks, and played by Barnes, is a feature component along with Trost?s soaring and diving violin. The duo play nearly every instrument, but have some wonderful guest musicians on a few tracks- Turkish clarinetist Cüneyt Sepetçi, Hungarian cimbalom master Unger Balász, Chicago trumpeter Sam Johnson, who often tours with the group, Deerhoof guitarist John Dieterich, and New Mexico bassist Noah Martinez of the band Lone Piñon.

?Chief heir to the tenor tradition of Jan Garbarek and Michael Brecker,? (All About Jazz) Norwegian saxophonist Marius Neset has seen his profile explode on the European jazz scene and is now making serious waves in the States. Born into a family of professional classical musicians, the 32-year-old Neset was first known for his work with renowned British multi-instrumentalist Django Bates and as a founding member of the Scandinavian ensembles JazzKamikaze and People Are Machines.

Neset?s career as a bandleader has moved expansively, drawing upon his classical upbringing in the use of strings, winds, brass, and synthesizers in addition to the traditional jazz combo lineup, giving a unique signature to his spacious and dramatic compositions. He?s led seven sessions under his own name, including 2014?s Lion with the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra, and 2016?s Snowmelt accompanied by the London Simphonietta. His newest album for the ACT Music label, Circle of Chimes, features pianist Ivo Neame and drummer Anton Eger ? two-thirds of the innovative British piano trio Phronesis ? along with Beninese guitar luminary Lionel Loueke plus cello, flute, bass, and percussion. The UK?s Guardian calls the record ?deft, poingnant, and jam-packed with ideas.?

An obsession with money, an unfaithful lover, a friend?s accidental pregnancy, misogyny, loneliness, death? This is just some of the lighthearted subject matter that make up LONER??the darkly comedic second album from songwriter/producer Caroline Rose. Armed with an arsenal of new instruments and equipment, an ever-growing sense of ?ahhh fuck it,? two years of exploration, and a wicked sense of humor, Rose delivers a set of serious songs wrapped in a sprightly, angsty pop burrito. Because, as Rose puts it, ?Sometimes sad songs just need a cocktail.?

LONER captures the cheeky satire, comical musings, and often jarring mood swings??sometimes goofy, sometimes emotional??that make up much of Rose?s personality. ?I call it Schizodrift,? she says sipping on a martini with her pinky out. ?I want to make music that sounds as manic as I feel.? Filled with catchy synth hooks, Ray Manzarek-esque Farfisa, surf guitar, depth of thought and a punk attitude, LONER captures the energy of bands like Le Tigre and The Cramps, and nods to the styles of Blondie and DEVO, the pop hooks of icons like Justin Timberlake, all the while being inspired by the artistry of Kate Bush. ?I?d say this album was as much inspired by Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears as it was late 70s punk.? How did she get here? According to Rose, the transition was natural.

LONER began about three years ago. ?I was 24, lonely, and realizing life might actually be as hard as people said it was. Gandalf had yet to raise his staff and part the seas for me,? she says with a straight face. ?I felt a bit disillusioned with my music; it didn?t sound like my personality. I hadn?t dated in years, I was going to lose health care. I felt detached from the modern world.? So what did she do about it? ?I joined Tinder. I turned 25 and rented my first real apartment and painted it bright colors. I started socializing more and little by little, weeded out all my clothes that weren?t red. I embraced my queerdom. I had a girlfriend, we traveled the country, we broke up. I discussed politics, capitalism and Rihanna. For better or worse, I became a member of the modern world. Turns out the modern world is terrifying,? she says attempting to pluck an olive out of her glass.

When it came to writing about all of it, what followed marked the beginning of a fully formed Caroline Rose. ?I needed to get more personal, more aggressive. more humorous and more sonically diverse than my older material,? referring to 2014?s slinky indie-folk-rockabilly-tinged album I Will Not Be Afraid. The record was penned over four years ago while Rose was living in a van traveling the country, and received critical acclaim from national press outlets like NPR and Rolling Stone. LONER, however, marks a significant leap forward both sonically and emotionally, unleashing a burgeoning confidence teeming with character. Asked how she?d describe the transition, Rose responds, ?It just felt like a bubble inside me that had been growing and was about to pop.? In a burst of creative energy, she penned and produced a slew of songs that began circulating among labels and press, resulting in a Tiny Desk Concert for NPR Music.

Over the next year and a half, Rose ?got super into production and mixing??I was working 10-hour days creating new sounds, finessing EQ, blending tones, sampling basically everything. Having an apartment [rather than living in a van] gave me the space to have more instruments than just a guitar. I started collecting synths and recording equipment and tracking my material. I signed with a label that gave me a lot of creative control and resources.? After sessions and meetings with over a dozen producers, Rose chose to co-produce alongside Paul Butler (Devendra Banhart, Michael Kiwanuka, Hurray For The Riff Raff) at Panoramic Studio in Stinson Beach, California and the studios of Butler and Rose. A multi-instrumentalist and producer herself, Rose brought to the sessions pre-recorded work the two used as a foundation off which to build, having written and arranged strings, played and recorded keys, guitar and bass, sampled layers of found and recorded sounds, and programmed synths and drums. ?The rest was a lot of experimentation in the studio, trying out different sounds and getting weird,? She adds. ?Paul added a lot in that way. Neither of us are afraid to try things and throw a bunch of sounds at the wall.?

Another thing that drove Rose to pursue production more seriously was the blatant lack of gender diversity in the music industry. ?I noticed over the course of all these meetings there was not a single female or nonbinary producer. Then the more I read up on why, the more I realized there actually are a lot of us, we just aren?t taken as seriously and either don?t receive or don?t demand the credit that we deserve.? In response, Rose stepped up across the board, having a hand in mixing as well as directing creative control over all aesthetics regarding the album. ?I wanted to make sure everything was as me as it could possibly be.?

According to Rose, the visuals and aesthetics of LONER are an important vehicle in bringing out her personality, as well as a lot of the more sarcastic elements within the music. ?I?ve gotten really interested in the visuals over the years, from producing videos and creatively crafting the images to how I express myself via what I wear.? The video for ?Money,? for example, written and directed by Rose and Horatio Baltz, depicts Rose playing all of the parts??a sort of maniacal, Coen Brothers-meets-David Lynch two-minute story involving three people (perhaps the same person?) that leaves viewers asking?What just happened? Not too different a feeling after listening to LONER, in fact. And this, is precisely how Caroline Rose wants you to feel.

It?s the ease with which he delivers conversational lyrics and honeyed melodies, a natural magic that is the soul of Tom Freund?s music. Though he?s widely-traveled in a variety of genres? from hearftelt folk to buoyant pop to boho jazz to straightforward rock ?n? roll, and beyond ?Freund is, simply put, a singer-songwriter with a defined and captivating presence.

Freund?s latest disc ?Two Moons? on Surf Road Records draws roots sources for an urbane Americana sound, melding nostalgia with a raw and sharp-eyed views of life today. ?If Two Moons, with its underlying message of hope in this messy world of ours, serves as an inspiring, encouraging soundtrack for listeners, then I can say to myself, ?ok, you?re doing something right for the people out there?, Freund says. He delivers this CD?s main message in the standout track ?Lemme Be Who I Wanna Be,? in which he declares: ?I?m basically hooked on this life/it?s got a lot of problems/but it treats me real right/and you don?t have to agree with me/but let me fly my freak flag.? This oddly upbeat anthem of personal empowerment so impressed Canadian rock star Serena Ryder that she asked to sing on it. The opening track ?Angel Eyes,? featuring vocals by Ben Harper, serves as Freund?s take on Randy Newman?s ?I Love L.A.? motif, expresses his appreciation to his Southern California friends for always having his back. Notes of nostalgia play into Tom?s self-declared favorite track ?Mind of Your Own? which delves into a deeply personal memory of the New York native?s childhood home.

Freund spent the mid-?90s touring with the indie rock cult faves THE SILOS and has been releasing solo albums since 1998. Tom has alternated between recording and touring behind his own discs, playing upright bass, electric bass guitar, and mandolin with the likes of British pub-rock great Graham Parker (who hailed Freund as one of the best singer-songwriters operating today), pop star Mandy Moore, groove-soul sensation Brett Dennen, Rock ?n Roll Hall of Famer Jackson Browne, and three-time Grammy winner Ben Harper. ?What really brought me to wanting to work with Tom in the studio is his songs,? Treepeople was a punk band from Boise, Idaho, although it spent most of its time and was officially based in Seattle, Washington. The band was formed in 1988 by Scott Schmaljohn (Stuntman, The Treatment, The Hand), Pat ?Brown? Schmaljohn (Hive), Wayne Rhino Flower (Violent Green, The Halo Benders, Faintly Macabre?), and Doug Martsch (Built to Spill, Halo Benders). Treepeople went through a few incarnations and finally disbanded in 1994, having released five albums and a handful of singles. These reunion shows will feature all living original members and Troy Wright (Ipper, Troyject, Hand of Doom, Sandusky Furs, Magnetics, Psychic Knot, Dunce Cap, USA {United States of Apathy}) on bass, replacing Pat who passed away in 1999 (RIP). The band reunited in March of 2018 for a handful of shows.

A ?virtuosic marvel,? (SJ Mercury) gypsy guitarist, vocalist, and Bay Area native George Cole pays tribute to the music of singer and pianist Nat ?King? Cole in a celebration of what would have been his 99th birthday, accompanied by a superb trio that echoes King Cole?s signature piano/guitar/bass format.

Deeply versed in the ?jazz manouche? style pioneered by guitar legend Django Reinhardt in the 1930s, George Cole is the curator and director of violin and guitar for the annual Esprit de Django et Stéphane Festival at The Freight and Salvage in Berkeley, though his versatility and musicality have led to collaboration with iconic singer Keely Smith, bluegrass giant David Grisman, and rock mainstays Joe Walsh and Chris Isaak. For Cole Swings Cole, the guitarist explores the timeless tunes made famous by Nat ?King? Cole, from Cole?s signature compositions like ?Straighten Up and Fly Right? to his indelible approach to the Great American Songbook, infusing them with his masterful style.

?A master bassist and bandleader,? (Boston Globe), Dave Holland has inhabited the music?s adventurous edge ever since Miles Davis hired him to anchor his band in 1968. Imagine if Simon and Garfunkel were lost at sea, salt in their beards, wind at their backs, and whiskey in their bottles. What songs would they sing whilst stomping like melodious madmen on the boards of their boat? Or set yourself adrift for a piece, untether yourself from your daily affairs, bring only fresh water, a large writing pad and plenty of pencils. With only the endless sky above and the wine-dark waters below, what half-crazed tales would pour out of you?

Welcome to the mythic world of Son of Town Hall, the unusual union of Ben Parker of London, England, and David Berkeley of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Parker, a highly sought-after London-based songwriter/producer/multi-instrumentalist, and Berkeley, a celebrated singer/songwriter/guitarist/author have imagined a world that transcends time and space, complete with Victorian-era outfits, meditations about the sea and songs that beg you to sing along. The show is three-parts concert, one-part theater. It will leave you transformed, with your heart full of laughter and tears, drunk on adventure and the tragic beauty of the human condition.

Son of Town Hall springboards from the story of the aforementioned two finding themselves side by side aboard a junk raft (?The Son of Town Hall?) crossing the mighty Atlantic in search of new lands, new inspiration and to recover squandered fortune. It?s as if the two sailed their ship back a century or so, though neither Berkeley, nor Parker openly acknowledge the anachronistic quality in their songs or presentation.

They do, however, recognize how special their sound is. ?Perhaps it was the solitude out there,? Parker explains when we caught up with the bearded duo off the coast of Maine, ?or maybe it was the strong gratitude you feel when you finally encounter another vessel. Or maybe it was all the raw coffee beans and cheap rum we consumed... well whatever it was, we learned to sing out there. More importantly, we learned to sing together.? And sing together they do, harmonies that haven?t been heard, perhaps, since the Louvin Brothers.

?You learn a lot on the high seas,? Berkeley adds. ?Skills and endurance you didn?t know you possessed. Music and storytelling kept us afloat, kept us alive, really. We developed a blend and a sound that led even the sea creatures and the moon to pay attention. We just had to hope that it would translate on dry land.?

Well, as anyone at one of Son of Town Hall?s packed shows across America or Europe can attest, their sound has translated just fine. Audiences consistently leave a show muttering that they?ve never quite experienced something like it. And if the early indications prove true, the two will soon need to build a bigger boat, for everyone who floats near them wants to jump aboard.

The explosive British jazz scene has produced a number of the most exciting and forward-thinking artists working today, and London-born saxophonist and rapper Soweto Kinch stands at the vanguard of this revolution, now firmly established as a leader at the intersection of jazz and hip-hop.

The son of a Barbadian playwright father and a British-Jamaican actress mother, Kinch began on saxophone at nine, and credits a meeting with Wynton Marsalis for putting him on the jazz path. Within a year of establishing the Soweto Kinch Trio in 2001, a then 24-year-old Kinch won the Rising Star award from the BBC Jazz Awards as well as the White Foundation World Saxophone Competition prize at the Montreux Jazz Festival. From the time of his youth, the altoist absorbed the influence of contemporary hip-hop, and concurrent with the formulation of his jazz expertise, he developed a fearsome free-style rap approach which won fans and collaborators in Mos Def, KRS-One and Dwele. Kinch?s 2003 debut release, Conversations with the Unseen, was a Mercury Prize nominee, and the multi-faceted artist has gone on two record three more innovative albums, compose for theatre and dance, star in a BBC reality show By Royal Appointment, and mastermind the wildly successful Birmingham music festival Flyover Show. Kinch currently hosts Jazz Now on BBC Radio 3.
