Lauded by the New Yorker as ?a young superstar,? Cameron Carpenter has done so much more than merely ruffle the feathers of the organ?s stodgy establishment ? the 33-year-old virtuoso has taken a sledgehammer to organ conventions while forcing the cloistered organ world to acknowledge his iconoclastic vision. With the introduction of his groundbreaking International Touring Organ, he is solely responsible for the first significant advance in his instrument?s development in over a century. Winner of the prestigious Bernstein Award (Schleswig-Holstein), Carpenter has devoted himself to expanding the organ?s frontiers in terms of repertoire as well. Through his numerous transcriptions of non-organ works, collaborations with jazz and pop musicians, and his ambitious original compositions, he ventures into uncharted territory. He tops it off with bravura showmanship, presiding over the instrument with all four limbs in furious motion. Following the smash success of his Sony Classical debut, If You Could Read My Mind, and its wildly divergent program of classical and re-imagined pop compositions, Carpenter returns with All You Need is Bach, a program of J.S. Bach organ and clavier music. His four-night run marks the return of his custom-built International Touring Organ, a groundbreaking digital instrument and elaborate speaker system that, like its owner, brings the centuries-old pipe organ tradition firmly into the 21st century.

Nearly 40 albums as a leader and collaborations with Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker, Kenny Wheeler and dozens more have made him among the most versatile and prolific bassist/composers in jazz history. ?One of the most studied (and copied) saxophonists on the planet,? (DownBeat) Chris Potter began his musical journey in the late 1980s, laying the foundation for his current position as a leading light in jazz in which he has shared the studio and bandstand with a staggering list of major artists including Pat Metheny, Paul Motian, Herbie Hancock, Jim Hall, Steely Dan and the Mingus Big Band. Since arriving in the Bay Area in 1970 as a celebrated teenage prodigy trained by his legendary father Alla Rakha, Zakir Hussain has played an essential role bringing the rhythmic sophistication of North Indian classical music into a diverse array of settings. Starting his career as a preternaturally talented youth, which included being the subject of the Oscar-nominated documentary film Jules at Eight, a GRAMMY Awards performance at 13, and faculty status at the Stanford Jazz Workshop at 15, Santa Rosa-born guitarist Julian Lage?s trajectory has been linear, embracing jazz, pop, country, bluegrass, and acoustic folk. Star-making work with Gary Burton, Bèla Fleck, and Chris Thile, as well as duet projects with guitarists Chris Eldridge and Nels Cline (Wilco) have led to Lage?s current trio. Following up Lage?s 2016 debut release Arclight, which embraced originals and pre-bebop jazz, the group performs music from their new Mack Avenue recording, Modern Lore.

He has forged his own bold synthesis of bebop and Cuban styles, playing a central role in revolutionizing Cuban music as founding member of Irakere, one of the most innovative and influential Afro-Cuban bands of all time whose embrace of the jazz tradition flew in the face of state-sanctioned music of the island nation.

Sandoval?s hero Dizzy Gillespie helped spread the trumpeter?s reputation by showcasing his stratospheric technique and soulful melodic sense in the United Nations Orchestra, and it was during a 1990 tour with the bebop legend that Sandoval defected to the U.S. to finally escape the oppression of Castro?s government. His life was the subject of HBO?s biographical film For Love or Country starring Andy García in the title role, and 25 years after his escape from Communist rule, Sandoval paid tribute to his mentor Gillespie with his 2012 Concord release, Dear Diz (Everyday I Think of You), winning a GRAMMY for Best Large Jazz Ensemble. He?s recorded nearly 30 albums as a leader and worked with a legion of artists ranging from Tito Puente and Paquito D?Rivera to Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett. In 2013, President Obama awarded Sandoval the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation?s highest civilian honor, in recognition of his lifetime of cultural contributions.

?Chief heir to the tenor tradition of Jan Garbarek and Michael Brecker,? (All About Jazz) Norwegian saxophonist Marius Neset has seen his profile explode on the European jazz scene and is now making serious waves in the States. Born into a family of professional classical musicians, the 32-year-old Neset was first known for his work with renowned British multi-instrumentalist Django Bates and as a founding member of the Scandinavian ensembles JazzKamikaze and People Are Machines.

Neset?s career as a bandleader has moved expansively, drawing upon his classical upbringing in the use of strings, winds, brass, and synthesizers in addition to the traditional jazz combo lineup, giving a unique signature to his spacious and dramatic compositions. He?s led seven sessions under his own name, including 2014?s Lion with the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra, and 2016?s Snowmelt accompanied by the London Simphonietta. His newest album for the ACT Music label, Circle of Chimes, features pianist Ivo Neame and drummer Anton Eger ? two-thirds of the innovative British piano trio Phronesis ? along with Beninese guitar luminary Lionel Loueke plus cello, flute, bass, and percussion. The explosive British jazz scene has produced a number of the most exciting and forward-thinking artists working today, and London-born saxophonist and rapper Soweto Kinch stands at the vanguard of this revolution, now firmly established as a leader at the intersection of jazz and hip-hop.

The son of a Barbadian playwright father and a British-Jamaican actress mother, Kinch began on saxophone at nine, and credits a meeting with Wynton Marsalis for putting him on the jazz path. Within a year of establishing the Soweto Kinch Trio in 2001, a then 24-year-old Kinch won the Rising Star award from the BBC Jazz Awards as well as the White Foundation World Saxophone Competition prize at the Montreux Jazz Festival. From the time of his youth, the altoist absorbed the influence of contemporary hip-hop, and concurrent with the formulation of his jazz expertise, he developed a fearsome free-style rap approach which won fans and collaborators in Mos Def, KRS-One and Dwele. Kinch?s 2003 debut release, Conversations with the Unseen, was a Mercury Prize nominee, and the multi-faceted artist has gone on two record three more innovative albums, compose for theatre and dance, star in a BBC reality show By Royal Appointment, and mastermind the wildly successful Birmingham music festival Flyover Show. Kinch currently hosts Jazz Now on BBC Radio 3.
