The Neighbourhood
The second album from The Neighbourhood, 'Wiped Out!' came to life in a makeshift living-room studio near the band's Southern California hometown. After spending three months dreaming up riffs and beats and melodies at a live-in studio by the ocean, singer Jesse Rutherford, guitarists Jeremy Freedman and Zach Abels, bassist Mikey Margott, and drummer Brandon Fried took up in Abels's mom's Simi Valley home, set up their equipment on a ping-pong table, and began piecing those otherworldly sounds into songs. Working with producer Jono Dorr -- one half of the production team 4e, who collaborated with The Neighbourhood on their 2014 mixtape '#000000 & #FFFFFF' -- the L.A.-based band built off their hip-hop-meets-alt-pop aesthetic and shaped a whole new sound that's stark but intricately layered, moody but hypnotically melodic.

"Since the last album came out, people have asked us about how we came up with a song like 'Sweater Weather,'" says Rutherford, referring to the double-platinum breakout single from The Neighbourhood's 2013 debut 'I Love You.' "I've thought about that a lot, and I swear it just comes down how we felt on that day and where we were at in our lives. Being at Zach's place really brought us back to that, and put our emotions in exactly the right place."

In making 'Wiped Out!,' The Neighbourhood also reunited with 'I Love You.' co-producer Justyn Pilbrow, who headed up their sessions at Morning View Studios in Malibu. And for lead single "R.I.P. 2 My Youth," the band joined forces with producer Benny Blanco (Marina and the Diamonds, Mikky Ekko, Icona Pop) and created a hazy meditation on getting older and shedding naiveté. With its sleepy beat and piercing lyrics ("Tell my sister don't cry and don't be sad/I'm in paradise with Dad/Close my eyes and then cross my arms/Put me in the dirt, let me dream with the stars"), "R.I.P. 2 My Youth" perfectly embodies the emotional dynamic at the heart of 'Wiped Out!.' "One vision I had in the beginning of making the album was that I wanted it to be happy music for sad people to listen to," Rutherford notes.

Another element of The Neighbourhood's initial vision for 'Wiped Out!': the crashing ocean waves and assorted other beachy sounds heard all throughout the album. "Atmospherics have always been really important to us," says Rutherford. "I like the idea of putting people in a certain place visually -- like picturing us in California, the ocean being part of us." Along with adding to 'Wiped Out!''s swirling textures, those atmospherics also subtly reflect the album's theme of growing up and getting on. "For me it's got to do with becoming whole, making a complete circle and getting a clean start," says Rutherford. "The ocean takes you up and spits you out, and you feel new but aware."

From the spacey guitar tones and chaotic sprawl of its title track to the slinky groove and delicate vocals of "Daddy Issues" ("I know that you've got daddy issues/And I do too"), 'Wiped Out!' endlessly warps genre but maintains a fragile beauty from beginning to end. "It's like in Malibu we were building a scrapbook of ideas, and at Zach's we pulled out the best ones and brought them together all into one package," says Fried of the album-making process. Evident in everything from the psychedelic guitar work on "Baby Come Home Pt. 2" to the bass-heavy groove of "Cry Baby," that process involved what Fried describes as "taking what we were doing as a live band and bringing it to the studio and creating a sound that's more like what we vibe off of when we're touring." And as a result, The Neighbourhood achieves a more frenetic energy and looser feel than ever before. "With the last album, we started in a studio and then translated the songs live and became a band through things we wrote all on computers," says Rutherford. "These songs were written as a full fucking band, so you sit there and play them and it's like, 'Oh, this feels really good.'"

Along with expanding their sound on 'Wiped Out!,' The Neighbourhood also sharpened their lyrical sensibility. "I used to write in a more stream-of-consciousness kind of way, just writing whatever was happening in my life at the time," says Rutherford. "But for this one I wanted to really get to how I was actually feeling." Though he notes that getting more raw and revealing in his lyrics had its painful moments, Rutherford hopes the end result will strengthen the songs' power of connection. "If people were able to relate to the old stuff, I feel like this could be even more relatable because it goes past just the boo-hoo problems of the day and gets to something deeper," he says.

Formed in summer 2011, The Neighbourhood grew up together in the Newbury Park area of Thousand Oaks, California. After self-releasing two EPs in 2012 ('I'm Sorry...' and 'Thank You,'), the band made their full-length debut with 'I Love You.' in April 2013. With their first Columbia Records release hailed by Billboard as a "darkly moody album [that] aptly culls together indie rock and R&B," lead single "Sweater Weather" emerged as one of the biggest singles of 2013, shooting to the top 10 on the pop charts and holding at #1 on the alternative charts for eight weeks total. As second single "Afraid" climbed to #3 at alternative radio, The Neighbourhood followed up the album with extensive touring, selling out venues throughout the U.S., Europe, and Russia and taking the stage with artists like The 1975 and a then-little-known Travis Scott. Digging further into their hip-hop roots, the band next put out the Don Cannon and DJ Drama-hosted '#000000 & #FFFFFF,' with the groundbreaking mixtape featuring the likes of Danny Brown and French Montana.

Since their earliest days, The Neighbourhood have embraced a black-and-white color scheme that extends to their clothing, artwork, and every other visual element of the band. According to Rutherford, holding true to that imagery allows for some guiding limitation as they explore so many textures and tones and rhythms within their music-making. "When we start working on a song, the one thing I know is that it's in black and white," he says. "Having that one rule really keeps our heads in a certain space."

If there's another rule that steered the band through the making of 'Wiped Out!' and continues to guide them now, it's a commitment to staying inventive in their artistry. So while The Neighbourhood have a shared passion for pop music ("I love hooks of all sorts, I love catchy things, I love candy," says Rutherford), they're also uncompromising about their belief in pushing pop forward. "There's a lot of artists making music that takes an old idea and just updates it for 2015," says Rutherford. "And sometimes it's really good music, but it's not really new. For us, if we're working on a song and it reminds us of some other song, we're automatically like, 'Okay, so we can change everything, or just get rid of it altogether.' We don't ever want to sound like anything else or stay in the same place. We've progressed with every new thing we've done, and we're just going to keep on progressing."

HEALTH is an noise rock band, from Echo Park, Los Angeles, consisting of four members including Benjamin Jared Miller, Jake Duzsik, John Famiglietti, and Jupiter Keyes. All are from different cities including Seattle, San Diego, and their current home base, Los Angeles. Jake met Jupiter in college. John met Jake in a guitar store. Jared was drawn to the fold by way of Internet courtship.

The band is often considered noise rock, but besides having some slight elements of the genre, they don?t fit the sound of other, current bands included in the noise rock scene, due to them mixing such genres as dance and electronica.

Cold War Kids
On their sixth album LA Divine, Cold War Kids pay tribute to Los Angeles and all its strange glory. The follow-up to 2014's Hold My Home -- featuring the gold-certified single "First" -- the band's latest is slightly tongue-in-cheek in its title. "In many ways LA is the least divine city, the most hedonistic and irreverent and disconnected from history," says Cold War Kids singer/guitarist/pianist Nathan Willett. Still, LA Divine embodies the Long Beach-bred band's endless fascination with their adopted hometown. "LA's so massive, I feel like I'm always finding something new in it," says bassist Matt Maust. "It's an incredibly weird place, and I'm happy to have made a record that totally honors that weirdness."

A feeling of infinite discovery instills much of LA Divine, the band's most expansive and ambitious effort so far. With Cold War Kids having recently marked the 10-year anniversary of their acclaimed debut Robbers & Cowards (a 2006 release that spawned their breakthrough single "Hang Me Up to Dry"), the album channels the kinetic energy of a newly revitalized band. "The excitement I have about this new album -- it feels so much like the way I felt back when our first record came out," notes Maust.

For Cold War Kids -- whose lineup also includes drummer Joe Plummer, multi-instrumentalist Matthew Schwartz, and guitarist David Quon -- that rejuvenation follows a creative rebirth of sorts. As Willett explains, the band took a more pop-informed and decidedly inventive approach to the making of LA Divine. "From the start of the band, our tastes have always been very backward-looking in terms of the tones and sounds and instrumentation we're working with," he says. "On this album we wanted to embrace something more modern, because in many ways the most creative sounds happening right now are coming from the world of pop and out of that influence we've ironically created what sounds like our most rock record yet "

With its sonic palette inspired by everything from Frank Ocean's Blonde to Florence & The Machine to Alabama Shakes, LA Divine merges that artful, hook-minded production with Cold War Kids' classic post-punk grit. And in his lyrics, Willett offers both raw vulnerability and layered complexity, bringing his heart-on-sleeve sensibilities to songs exploring long-lasting love. "So many songs are about new love or about breakups, but I wanted to go deeper than that for this record," he says. "We're older now and we have more life experience, and it felt right to have these songs about the beauty and the ugliness that comes with long-term relationships."

Produced by their repeat collaborator Lars Stalfors (Health, Local Natives), LA Divine opens with lead single "Love Is Mystical": a soulful, sweeping anthem about seeking transcendence and greater depth in love. "It's a very LA thing but also just a very American thing: we think attraction is all about the physical, and we don't think so much about the spiritual or mysterious element of it," says Willett. A more pensive meditation on enduring love, the slow-burning "Restless" brings sparse beats and ethereal textures to bracingly honest lyrics about "the kind of relationship where you're both always searching for something more," according to Willett. And on "So Tied Up," British singer/songwriter Bishop Briggs lends her formidable vocals to a stomping, gospel-infused number that shines a light on everyday struggle ("Love is a twisted game and no one ever wins") but undeniably burns with the promise of hope.

Befitting of an ode to Los Angeles, LA Divine also confronts the anxieties of aging and the toxic lure of reckless living. Urgent and unhinged, "Luck Down" gives a blunt but loving picture of self-destruction ("I won't lecture you on Lexapro...You'd rather medicate/With every pour"). But while "Can We Hang On?" admits that "we cannot stay forever young and out of our heads," the song's cascading guitar work and soaring harmonies make for subtly triumphant look at growing older and stumbling toward transformation.

Threaded throughout LA Divine are several brief interludes that uncover the better-hidden realities of life in Los Angeles. Hazy and distorted, "LA River" captures a dreamlike desperation. With its lo-fi beats and jagged poetry, "Wilshire Protest" contemplates LA's culture of isolation ("We are separated by/Steel and glass/In traffic trapped on the freeway/Everybody is a DJ"). And with the fleeting piano ballad "Cameras Always On," Cold War Kids deliver a powerfully tender portrait of heartache in just 36 seconds ("I wanna be famous in your eyes but the camera's always on").

Based in LA for more than a decade, Cold War Kids formed in 2004, soon after Willett and Maust met in college and bonded over their obsession with the Blur album 13. After making their way through their homegrown Southern California scene, the band released Robbers & Cowards to major critical praise and much adoration from the mid-2000s blogosphere. The notably darker Loyalty To Loyalty followed two years later, while 2011's Mine Is Yours introduced a more anthemic element to the Cold War Kids catalog. With 2013's Dear Miss Lonelyhearts, the band returned to their fierce live sound and offered up their hit single "Miracle Mile." In addition to yielding the smash hit "First" (a track that shot to No. 1 on Billboard's Alternative Songs chart, where it spent six weeks in the top spot), Hold My Home debuted at No. 8 on Billboard's Top Alternative Albums chart and reached the top 20 of the Top Rock Albums chart.

On the heels of Hold My Home, Cold War Kids felt emboldened to bring a more deliberate, purposeful spirit to their music than ever before. "With our last record doing so well, there was a feeling of wanting to challenge ourselves and create something culture-shaping and important -- not just for our fans, but for anyone who loves music," says Willett. "We wanted to open ourselves up and be real and vulnerable about who we are and what we want to say, and at the same time push for a certain greatness."

Along with elevating Cold War Kids' songwriting on LA Divine, that ever-renewing sense of purpose continues to breathe new life into the band. "I've seen a lot of bands get burnt out on their own songs after playing them for years, but for me that's not the case," says Maust. "I've been playing 'Hospital Beds' for 13 years, and it means something different to me now than it did when we first started. I don't know where that spark comes from, but I don't think I can stir it up on my own. You have to keep constantly showing up -- and remember that this thing you created is really special, and you've got to do whatever you can to keep it alive."

Having been the subject and willing conspirator of many intentional lies planted in Sonic Youth bios over the years, I know first hand the way album lore can bend reality to its truth. After the infamous Byron Coley originated the SY ?Trilogy? myth in the Murray Street bio, we had no choice but to fulfill those expectations with Sonic Nurse. ?Why did you decide to make a trilogy?? was always the first question asked in interviews around that time.

But this is Kurt Vile?s bio, and I wont do that to him. Anyway, Kurt does his own myth making; a boy/man with an old soul voice in the age of digital everything becoming something else, which is why this focused, brilliantly clear and seemingly candid record is a breath of fresh air. Recorded and mixed in a number of locations, including Los Angeles and Joshua Tree, b?lieve i?m goin down? is a handshake across the country, east to west coast, thru the dustbowl history (?valley of ashes?) of woody honest strait forward talk guthrie, and a cali canyon dead still nite floating in a nearly waterless landscape. The record is all air, weightless, bodyless, but grounded in convincing authenticity, in the best version of singer songwriter upcycling. In Kurt?s words, ?I wanted to get back into the habit of writing a sad song on my couch, with nobody waiting on me. I really wanted it to sound like it?s on my couch ? not in a lo-fi way, just more unguarded and vulnerable.?

For a record that plays like a cohesive acoustic experience, its musicality marks Kurt?s departure from an electric guitar experience to include a range of instrumentation with a large group of players. From the banjo he plays on ?I?m an Outlaw? to the piano and lapsteel on ?Life Like This,? and the myriad other instruments on other songs, including farfisa, resonator, arps, horns and synth, one never thinks about what exactly yr listening to as it all serves the song.??The heart of the record is ?Stand Inside.? The music is quiet and the melody, like a hymn, folds in on itself, and embraces full strength in a sexy, floating forcelessness that slowly gathers into a wave that doesn?t go where you think it will or rather gives in to itself and celebrates a man willing to be defined by a woman and his love for her as witness to each other?s lives? Don?t stand by my side, stand inside gives up roleplaying for true exposure and vulnerability.

It?s a weird, accepting, mature record, acknowledging the inherent immaturity of being a person whether father, husband, partner, adult, musician, not perfect, but compelling for its understanding ? that?s life though so sad to say? I love this record,

Jenny Lewis
One of the most celebrated and respected performers of her generation, Jenny Lewis got her start as the dynamic frontwoman of influential LA group Rilo Kiley in 1998. She has since released three albums under her name, most recently 2014?s The Voyager. In addition to her solo work, she was a member of The Postal Service, part of the duo, Jenny and Johnny, as well as the lead vocalist for Nice As Fuck.
Lewis has collaborated with Beck, Elvis Costello, Ryan Adams and M. Ward, among others. She has also written music for films such as the musical/drama, Song One, starring Anne Hathaway and Very Good Girls starring Dakota Fanning and Elizabeth Olsen.

The Manchurians formed in 1999, carving a solid, rhythm and blues based sound around the songwriting of Roger Reale. In 1978 Reale released the LP, RadioActive (Big Sound/London), a pop underground gem. Since that time Reale has written for, among others, Buddy Guy; BB King; Johnny Winter; Freddie Scott; and the heir apparent to Albert King, Michael Burks. In addition, Reale also recorded an unreleased LP with the late Mick Ronson. The twice Grammy nominated, and WC Handy award nominated songwriter joined forces with ex-Scratch Band (GE Smith, Mickey Curry, Christine Ohlman) harmonica/vocalist Bob Orsi; guitarist/arranger Dean Falcone, who has worked with Jon Brion, Brian May (Queen), Aimee Mann, Bun E Carlos ( Cheap Trick), Jon Auer (Posies, Big Star), Joey Molland (Badfinger); and dynamic drummer Mat Reale (ex-BASE2) to produce, to date, four CD's under The Manchurians' banner. Past members have included: guitarist extraordinaire Mike Roth; and the legendary Hilton Valentine (The Animals). Today, they continue to bring R&B to the masses in their own unique, and inimitable style. Their live shows are characteristically intense and passionate; not to be missed.
