And local rock group Same As It Ever Was is all about defying expectations. "When we first started the band, it was definitely about the music first and foremost," founder Curtis Geren told The Daily Times this week. "We try to have some visually stimulating things going on. The guys wear costumes at every show, and we keep it Why the Talking Heads? Geren remembers watching the band's videos when he was a child, but it wasn't until his teenage years that he rediscovered the band's music again. "I respect the fact that they discovered a way to move the body and the mind at the same time," he said. "It's very conceptual and very profound music, and at the same time it gets people dancing. It's fun, very creative and very surreal at the same time. "At first, we were just excited to play the music itself, and anything else that might have come out of it remained to be seen. I think it was meant to be a really good ode to the Talking Heads, a really well-done tribute." What it's become is one of the most innovative groups and fun shows all over. Before forming SameAs It Ever Was, Geren researched online and found no other Talking Heads tribute bands out there. Today, he's part of an all-star ensemble that includes his brother Grant on rhythm guitar and vocals; Taylor Hiner on bass and vocals; Rusty Davidson on keyboards; Matt Aurand on percussion; Josh Hobbs on lead guitar; Steve Corrigan on drums; and local torch singer Sarah Clapp on backup vocals. The group's music alternates between faithful recreations ("Houses in Motion," "Crosseyed and Painless") to reinterpretations ("Stay Hungry.?) - The Daily Times

The Travelin' Kine

In two short years this hardworking local outfit has logged serious miles honing their sound: a mix of potent songwriting and fiery country chops, doused with a few shots of whiskey. With the help of a seasoned crew of local talent, singer Slaton Glover delivers a musical message of hellfire and heartbreak, leaving it all on the stage at every performance. Releasing their first album in early 2016, the Kine's first single "Change in the Wind" was voted 2015 CPMA Song of the Year. The Travelin? Kine amounts to some of the best lowcountry music in years. Ashes of Old Ways

Ashes of Old Ways is an Americana band, from Folly Beach, SC, with strong pop hooks and Three part harmonies.

The band first started out as a collaboration between songwriters Dave Britt and Bobby Sutton and has grown to include bassist Jamie Crisp (Big Stoner Creek, Champagne and Friends), drummer Baldwin Bonilla and multi-instrumentalist Bob Culver (Hungry Monks). The band has been touring cities in the South East (Atlanta, GA, Nashville, TN, Greenville, SC, Columbia, SC and Charleston, SC) for about a year now.

The band has played many festivals (The Mac-off, The Oyster Festival, Folly Pallooza, Taste of Folly and more) and was recently invited to play Charleston's "New Music Confab" for the Glassnote Record's Showcase.

Ashes released a new, self titled CD in the Spring of 2016.

The bands has also received airplay on Charleston's 105.5 The Bridge, WALI 93.1 Walterboro, SC and 99.3 WXRY in Columbia, SC for their new single "Living In the Present Tense"

Ashes of Old Ways was also recently featured on Charleston ABC's "Lowcountry Live" program.

Almost Steve

Almost Steve was started around 1995 when Jeff Buchanan and Bill Johnson teamed up with other Greenville,SC natives Brian Buchanan and Todd Verdin. Over the next couple of years they toured the Southeast and released self-produced album Green Vegas, Super City. Around 1998 the band went through some member changes with the addition of John Fitzgerald on keyboard and Aaron Lavigne on drums. Todd, Bill, and Ryan Taylor(percussion) then left to pursue other projects. About a year later, Bill returned to the band. It is during this time Almost Steve played some of it's biggest shows, including The House of Blues in Chicago, IL. They toured heavily for the next couple of years. This was a schedule which included being on the road for almost 25 days a month, traveling from Florida to Michigan. This was with the help of promoter James Lockhardt. Almost Steve returned home to change it's line-up for the last time, adding Brian Kennedy on drums. John left to pursue other projects bringing the Steves back to a four piece line up. Almost Steve continued to tour through the early part of the 2000's. This included going back to the Midwest, finally returning home to Charleston, SC in 2003. Then they began to work on their long awaited sophomore album. They worked at Fusion 5 Studios in Charleston under the direction of producer. John Yerick. Almost Steve worked for almost 6 months on this project, when reluctantly, they decided to trash the project and take an indefinite hiatus. Currently, the many members and many faces of Almost Steve still remain great friends, and occasionally you can catch the founding members Jeff and Bill playing acoustic shows around the Carolina.

For nearly a decade, American Aquarium have spent the majority of their days on the road, burning through a sprawl of highways during the day and playing hours of raw, rootsy rock & roll at night. Sometimes, the job is a grind. Most times, it?s a blessing. American Aquarium?s songs, filled with biographical lyrics about last calls, lost love and long horizons, have always explored both sides of that divide. For every drunken night at the bar, there?s a hangover in the morning. For every new relationship, there?s the chance of a broken heart. It?s that kind of honesty ? that sort of balance ? that makes the band?s newest album, Wolves, their strongest release to date.
And it nearly didn?t happen. When American Aquarium traveled to Muscle Shoals to record Burn.Flicker.Die. in 2012, they were convinced the album would be their last. Even though they had enlisted the help of award-winning singer-songwriter Jason Isbell to produce the sessions, they were exhausted; weathered and whittled to the bone by more than a half-decade of heavy partying and heavier touring. To a small group of diehard fans, they were absolute rockstars? but being rockstars to a cult audience doesn?t always put food on your table or gas in your tank. BJ Barham, the band?s frontman, was so poor that he?d been living out of a storage unit for months, unable to afford an apartment in the band?s hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina.

THE HEAVY PETS:
The Heavy Pets are a funky-ass rock and roll band from South Florida. Called "a living, breathing force of nature" by Relix magazine, they are known for their songcraft and powerhouse live performances. The band has been a mainstay on the national touring circuit for over a decade, and released its fourth full-length studio album Strawberry Mansion in February 2018.
The Pets are a seasoned live act, playing over 1200 shows across the country since their inception in 2005. The band's energetic, extended sets have been described as "full blown musical salvation" that embodies the sound of their Florida home, weaving together elements of indie rock, funk and reggae into a style that is uniquely their own.
The group became an instant Sirius radio sensation upon the release of their debut album Whale in 2007. The crossover sound on their self-titled release, named a "Top 10 Album of 2010" by The Huffington Post, propelled them into the periphery of mainstream music. 2011 saw the release of Swim Out Past The Sun, an acoustic affair featuring longtime Jerry Garcia collaborator David Grisman. Beginning in 2013, the band put out a series of three EPs recorded at the legendary Power Station studios.
The Heavy Pets are currently touring in support of their latest release, Strawberry Mansion. Recorded in South Florida over the course of 2017, the self-produced double LP is the culmination of twelve years as a full-time act, presenting the band?s writing and musical versatility in peak form. The album is the truest representation of the sound they have become known for, distilling elements of rock, funk and reggae into a style that is unmistakable.

Hailed as ?Midwestern rock heroes? by American Songwriter, Red Wanting Blue has spent the last twenty years establishing themselves as one of the indie world?s most enduring and self-sufficient acts, notching appearances everywhere from Letterman to NPR and reaching #3 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart, all while operating largely outside the confines of the traditional music industry. For their powerful new album, ?The Wanting,? the band handed production duties over to acclaimed singer/songwriter Will Hoge, who helped them create their most ambitious, fully realized collection yet.
