Plowing Into The Field Of Love is the third album from Copenhagen?s Iceage. It is new, bold and forceful. Channeling the rage and emotion of their tempestuous early releases into finely honed musicianship, Plowing Into The Field of Love features piano, mandolin, viola and organ atop Johan Suurballe-Wieth?s razor-sharp guitars and the lolloping, synchronized rhythm section of Jacob Tvilling Pless and Dan Kjær Nielsen. The record has a clear, uncompressed sound, and Elias Bender Rønnenfelt?s desperate vocals are out front, nakedly accountable for the words.

On this album, Rønnenfelt sings of what it is like to be out in the world, dizzy with its offerings, perched on a plateau of false confidence, bliss, fantasy and delirious self-denial. The autobiographical ?Forever,? for which Iceage have shared the video today, begins with a pretty repetitive motif over the words, ?I always had the sense that I was split in two,? and climaxes with a sunburst of horns recalling South African spiritual jazz great Mongezi Feza: ?If I could dive into the other, I?d lose myself forever.? At the other extreme, the album evokes a sort of euphoria, especially in the unexpectedly upbeat country number ?The Lord?s Favorite.? Yet desperation and loss lurks behind. This is an album about seeing, learning, and rejecting things, in a cycle that repeats and builds. The reference points are wildly varied, but the sound is uniquely and darkly Iceage as the record fights with itself, in the story it tells, and the sound it makes. It is not, however, a remotely difficult record. It is the anthemic sound of a band in motion, unafraid of change, filled with curiosity, musicality and ambition.

Despite our best efforts, there are some things we just can?t outrun. Everything catches up to us in the end, no matter what we do to hide from it. It?s a reality that Petal?s Kiley Lotz examines on Magic Gone, the band?s latest full-length album on Run For Cover.

Recorded over the course of a month at Studio 4 in Conshohocken, PA, Magic Gone is a bitingly honest look at adulthood, accountability, responsibility, mental health and the difficulties that go along with each of them. ?I was a closeted queer person struggling with chronic mental health disorders,? says Lotz of the three year period that inspired the album. ?There comes a moment where all the paranoia, anxiety and pain become too much and you realize the structure you built to survive is no longer is going to serve you. I had to make some very big life changes to make sure I didn?t die. It was not easy taking that level of control over my life after spending many years worrying about upsetting others and being the best and most successful person I could be.?

That?s not to say that the last few years have only been negative for Lotz - there were a lot of great moments, too. She moved from New York City to Philadelphia, changed her focus from acting and theatre to music, toured with Julien Baker, Slingshot Dakota, and Kevin Devine, and chose to come out and live openly as queer, which she looks back on as one of the most beneficial decisions she?s ever made. ?Coming out was the beginning of a long and continuing process of self actualization, of taking a hard look at myself and the problems I had, and how I could fix them,? says Lotz.

Still, the highs of her rapidly changing life weren?t able to outweigh the lows, and in early 2017, Lotz found herself hitting a breaking point. Her mental health was rapidly declining, and after a relapse of suicidality, she made the difficult decision to prioritize her health above all else and move back to her hometown to enter intensive treatment for her major depressive and panic disorders.

It was that duality - the valley between the positives and negatives of life that she?d experienced - that inspired Magic Gone and its two halves. Side A, titled Tightrope Walker, features songs Lotz wrote before entering treatment, while Side B, Miracle Clinger, is comprised of songs she wrote in recovery. ?I think those two parts of me are what kept me alive,? Lotz explains. ?I became so skilled at the act of getting through every day that I trusted that ability, but knew if I slipped I could face a bad end. Still, I couldn?t help but have faith in myself and people and God and that things could be better, even though I felt so lost and hopeless.?

The culmination of it all is an album that showcases Lotz? prowess as both a vocalist and a songwriter, drawing equal influence from ?70s powerhouses like Queen and Nina Simone as it does modern vocalists like Solange, Margaret Glaspy and Mitski. Producer Will Yip distills Lotz down to her purest form, lending an unprecedented rawness to her sound. Themes of duality even make their way into the album?s instrumentation, specifically in Lotz? decision to include church organ on it; playing organ was a huge part of her life growing up, and to this day the sound of it inspires both comfort and fear in her. Track by track, the singer transforms her vulnerability from a curse into a tool with which to examine both where she went wrong and where she went right in her struggle for survival. Lotz offers a lesson for each of us on having the courage to face our demons and make the best choices for ourselves. ?Really feeling what it?s like to be completely heartbroken, instead of just pushing it down so deeply, allowed me to see the true strength in vulnerability. That acknowledging pain, struggle, loss and heartbreak, is strong. That being out is strong. That being ill takes strength all it?s own.?

CAMP COPE
Born in a backyard in over home job tattoos, Camp Cope ? Georgia Maq (vocals, guitar), Kelly-Dawn Hellmrich (bass) and Sarah Thompson (drums) ? have become a force in music since forming in Melbourne in June 2015.

Their newly released sophomore album How To Socialise & Make Friends anchors on the cycles of life, loss and growth through resilience and those moments of finding and being yourself. It celebrates the joys of being an independent unit and knowing who you are without any influence from external factors, and non-romantic love felt towards friends; the women who shape you and women working together to find strength in numbers. It has been praised by triple j (Feature Album), The Independent (4 stars), Vinyl Mag (9.5/10), All Music (4 stars) among others. The Guardian?s co-head music critic Andrew Stafford awarded the album 4 stars, saying, ?For a generation that?s grown up watching vocal talent quests, hearing the unrestrained gusto of McDonald singing these simple, direct songs will be empowering. In 20 years, young women especially will approach her and thank Camp Cope for encouraging them to pick up a guitar and tell their own stories. And so the baton will be passed, and picked up again.?

Led by the singles ?Lost: Season One? and ?Jet Fuel Can?t Melt Steel Beams?, their Australian Music Prize-shortlisted self-titled debut saw critical acclaim from all corners, including in SPIN?s best emo, top albums in Noisey (US), with Brooklyn Vegan naming them one of the ?Best New Bands? and DIY Mag exclaiming, ?it?s rare to find a band with the sheer songwriting ability and integrity of Camp Cope.? They sold out two shows at Sydney Opera House as part of Vivid LIVE 2017, before touring the US for the first time, playing through 13 states with Brooklyn band Worriers. Upon returning home they headlined Melbourne?s Weekender Fest and most recently headlined a huge homecoming show at Melbourne?s iconic venue The Forum.

In September 2016, Camp Cope together with bands and musicians from Australia and abroad united for the It Takes One campaign to say enough is enough: no more sexual and physical assault at shows. The campaign continues to drive conversation around safe spaces at shows, including the introduction of the safe spaces Hotline initiative at Laneway Festival.

Chicago-based Post Animal are a band of brothers. Though they formed in 2014 and just began touring in 2017, their affinity for slick riffs, pop hooks, and psychedelic tendencies join them in a bond much tighter than their years suggest. Initially formed when childhood friends, bassist Dalton Allison and guitarist Matt Williams, met keyboardist and guitarist Jake Hirshland, the band?s sound began to take shape when the three enlisted some more pals from both the Chicago music scene and through their time working at local burger joints. Rounding out the band?s lineup, Post Animal is completed by drummer Wesley Toledo and guitarists Javi Reyes and Joe Keery.

Like most band?s in Chicago?s inclusive music community, Post Animal got their start playing DIY basements and small rock clubs. With their wavy and warped first project 2015?s Post Animal Perform The Most Curious Water Activities EP and then 2016?s memorable singles collection The Garden Series, the band showcased mesmerizing and infectious pop melodies. Between their impressive early releases and their wild live shows which feature the band members sharing lead vocal duties, Post Animal have unquestionably solidified themselves as one of Chicago?s most exciting up-and-coming acts. Having taken that intensity across the country, touring with bands like Twin Peaks, Wavves, White Reaper, and more, Post Animal have found they are happiest when playing to a room full of fellow music-lovers. As a result, they are road tested and stronger than ever.

The Chicagoans? debut full-length When I Think Of You In A Castle, out 4/20 via Polyvinyl, is the product of six friends creating music they love, even if the circumstances weren?t always in their favor. ?Before this album, we weren't sure what the future of the band was going to look like. I was considering moving to Los Angeles and Joe [Keery] was off filming Stranger Things. We didn't know where we were all going but we knew we wanted to make an album with all of us in the same room,? explains Toledo. Being the first time all Post Animal members recorded together, the album?s collaborative spirit is more-than-evident throughout its 10 carefully curated tracks. Even Keery, who?s no longer an active touring member of the band due to his skyrocketing acting career, was integral to the album?s inception.

In the summer of 2016, the band retreated to a lake house in Watervliet, Michigan to record When I Think Of You In A Castle. For a week and a half, they tracked the LP?all while realizing they weren?t really alone in the house. According to the band, a ghost dwelled there that would jolt them awake from naps and even ended up with a guest appearance on the album. Toledo explains, ?There?s a moment on ?Heart Made of Metal? where I hit the cymbals and, for some reason, it was recorded in reverse. We think that's the ghost.?

Of course, not all of the magic on When I Think Of You In A Castle can be pinned on the supernatural. Following the lake house trip, the band finished the album at their house in Chicago with Allison perfecting the mix over the next year; even while on their 48-city summer tour in their beloved van (RIP Shannon). Take the first single ?Ralphie,? which finds Keery and Allison gleefully trading lead vocals while sounding like what would happen if Jeff Lynne fronted Thin Lizzy. Though Post Animal?s live shows have long proven that swirling riffs are the band?s bread-and-butter, it?s earworms like ?Ralphie? that show how easily they can churn out an infectious pop melody.

?Ralphie? isn?t the only song that finds the band sharing lead vocal duties. In fact, each band member contributes vocals like Hirshland?s mesmerizing turn on ?Castle? or Williams? punchy performance on ?Heart Made of Metal.? Other songs, like the dynamic ?Gelatin Mode,? shift from a lighthearted experience in dueling lead guitars to a face-melting dose of sludge with ease. It?s such a transportive track that when Keery menacingly intones, ?Below, traveling slow out on your own / Your mind gelatin mode time to explode? it?s a welcome invitation.

Elsewhere, a longtime live staple ?Tire Eyes? finds new life on the LP. It?s a swaggering ode to a timeless classic rock song with Allison?s falsetto beckoning, ?So forget about your day and let this record float you away / As your mind is winding, finding cause to be easy.? The finished album, which was mastered by Jake?s brother, Jared Hirshland, is a truly collaborative continuation on the band?s kaleidoscopic and sprawling early beginnings.

But most importantly, When I Think Of You In A Castle is a testament to not only the brotherly connection that these friends share, but also to the power of collaboration between like-minded musicians who just get one another. ?Before we recorded it, it was an uncertain time for us as a band, but we all just had a magical time at this lake house in the middle of summer,? explains Toledo. Almost impossible to describe, the Post Animal bond is best observed while foolin? at the merch table after a sweaty show. They look forward to seeing you there and, naturally, becoming your new best friends.

Indie-pop band from Kansas City. The band formed as a trio in early 2012 under the name The I'ms, but after recording a handful of demo tracks and playing live only a few times, changed their name to Shy Boys before the summer of the same year. A few of the early demos ("Bully Fight," "Keeps Me On My Toes") were re-recorded for the band's debut album, but others (the lo-fi "Justine," the '60s pop throwback "Strange," and the French pop-inspired "Want Her") have yet to be released in an official capacity. Prior to recording their sophomore full-length, the band added Kyle Little on guitar and keyboards.

Bonny Doon emerged in 2014, its four members pivoting away from their punk origins to create something restrained and steeped in contemplation. Songwriters Bill Lennox and Bobby Colombo expanded their ongoing collaboration to include drummer Jake Kmiecik and bassist Joshua Brooks. From there Bonny Doon took form, developing a sound indebted as much to musical touchstones like Neil Young and the Silver Jews as it was to the emotional landscapes of their always changing hometown of Detroit.

The group recorded what became a self-titled 7? in the summer of 2014, tracked by Fred Thomas in his living room. A tape of 4-track demos, ?Classical Days and Jazzy Nights,? followed in 2015, before reenlisting Thomas to record their texturally dense debut LP, which melded their penchant for time-honored songcraft with production heavy on tape-delay and glowing, roomy sonics. The album was released on Salinas in early 2017, as the band was already deep into work on material for a follow-up. Working in a studio for the first time, they captured a more spare and vulnerable sound and signed on with Woodsist to release the resultant album, Longwave.
