After several years as a headlining house team at The PIT, Gypsy Danger is bringing their unique brand of improv to The Tank! Based on a suggestion from the audience, and utilizing the tropes and cliches of Hollywood classics new and old, Gypsy Danger will improvise a never-before-seen movie. Gypsy Danger is Nick Carrillo, Joanna Shaw Flamm, Katie Hartman, Devin Heater, Ben Jaeger-Thomas, Evan Kaufman, Mitch Lucas, Sarah Peele, and Claire Yale.

The Brooklyn Generator comes to The Tank! Now in its 6th Season, we are excited to bring our new play generation project to The Tank.

The Brooklyn Generator is the creation of Erin Mallon and Bixby Elliot. Originally started by Erin when she began making plays back in 2010 with a rotating group of 6 playwrights and 12 actors who gathered once a month on a Friday night to create six 10-minute plays in less than two days. Erin continued this way for 2 years and they collectively wrote about 140 short plays. Then, after a hiatus, Bixby and Erin put their heads together and asked each other "how can we adapt this model to support the creation of full-length plays?"

Cut to June 2014 when they re-launched The Brooklyn Generator with six great playwrights. The Generator supports each other over a six month period during which each playwright takes a turn being "Playwright-of-the-Month," bringing actors and directors to the table to create brand new full-length plays in less than 30 days. Six seasons later they are still going strong.

The Brooklyn Generator has been home to the following artists: Mallery Avidon, Eboni Booth, Ed Cardona Jr., Guadalís Del Carmen, Bixby Elliot, Georgina Escobar, Ken Greller, Amina Henry, Stephen Kaplan, Erin Mallon, Sarah Matusek, Julian J. Manufacturing Mischief, the New York premiere of a satirical play by Pedro Reyes that features puppet characters based on Noam Chomsky, Karl Marx, Ayn Rand, Elon Musk and Tiny Trump. The work was conceived as part of Reyes residency as the inaugural Dasha Zhukova Distinguished Visiting Artist at the MIT Center for Art, Science & Technology.
It deals with issues of technology, ideology and the current political climate from a critical perspective, while also serving as entertainment and speaking both to scholars and a broader audience alike.
The plot centers around two MIT students who are planning a birthday surprise for MIT Professor Emeritus Noam Chomksy, using a new form of artificial intelligence called the Print-A-Friend. After they insert a book, out pops the author Karl Marx, bringing one of Chomskys heroes, back to life. Through a series of mishaps, Ayn Rand and Tiny Trump also appear and wreak havoc on the party. Hoping to make amends for a gift gone haywire, the students try to enlist the help of Elon Musk, but encounter his robot surrogate instead. In the end, they are left to grapple with the unintended consequences of their technological innovation.

Using comedy to address political discourse and the dilemmas that artificial intelligence and late capitalism pose, the play serves as a critique of new technologies for automation, such as self-driving cars and robots that replace humans in the workforce, as well as the class conflicts that ensue when technology eliminates jobs.

ABOUT PEDRO REYES
Pedro Reyes is a widely celebrated multi-platform artist, activist and educator based in Mexico City. He uses all aspects of visual art and education to address political and social issues. One of his main commitments is using the arts to reduce gun violence. In 2008, Reyes commenced Palas por Pistolas. The program collected over 1,527 guns donated from Mexican citizens, melted them down into 1,527 shovels, and then gave them to various schools and art institutions, which in turn used them to plant 1,527 trees. The program's success garnered attention from the Mexican government, which donated 6,700 weapons that Reyes converted into musical instruments. As part of this pacifist effort, he created Amendment to the Amendment, a traveling workshop where US citizens take part in a rewrite of the Second Amendment. Last year, he was one of 13 artists included in the Ford Foundations The Art of Change fellowship program. His work Doomocracy was presented by Creative Time at the Brooklyn Army Terminal in 2016.

Revisiting work from the last 30 years, choreographer Susan Rethorst draws on the old bits and pieces to join new material in a work created for and with dancers Gabrielle Revlock and Gregory Holt. Rethorst savors little gestures and brackets them in delicious paragraphs that become evocative stories. She has said she is interested in ?movements that were like found objects,? and has no fear of making challenging work. Some say the experience is like being transfixed by a great painting.

?An appetite for the unknown" - Daniel Lanois

No collaboration is unlikely when the end goals are the same. A meeting of two artists who illustrate different corners of the musical landscape, come together to create a new statement that takes their collective strengths to higher elevations and encompasses new terrains.

So it is on the first collaborative journey of Canadian musicians Venetian Snares and Daniel Lanois. What started as mutual respect for one another?s work, led to several years of a creative germination resulting in an eight-track full-length exploration released May 4th on Timesig/Planet Mu.

The path began in 2014, after Lanois reached out to Venetian Snares (Aaron Funk) as a fan of his work. The project started to take root in Summer of 2016, after Funk hung around Toronto between shows. Taking his gear to Lanois? studio, the two began to play for the first time together in what would prove to be a formative moment in their creative journey together.

?I love making music with Dan, he has a real understanding of how to create a world and build what may exist within that world. Bassdrums are trombones and they are a colossal whale which floats on clouds of leaves speaking to the blast furnace feeding the mammoth. Recorded live in a former Buddhist temple-turned-studio in Toronto, 'Venetian Snares x Daniel Lanois' travels to new zones in what Lanois describes as ?a body of work driven by exploration?. Like all the best collaborations, it's brought something new out of both musicians. Equipped with their production acuity, they let their natural workflow guide them through uncharted waters. Funk laid the groundwork with drums while Lanois rode the pedal steel, weaving their sounds together in a new sonic tapestry. The two ultimately landed at their destination, their work ready to be shared with those willing to explore.

Inspired by a destructive and loss-heavy apartment fire in June of 2016, the Hats have cleaned up, streamlined and will be self-releasing their first full-length record since 2014 this Fall. Surprisingly, the band, who continue to live together, see the fire as something of a blessing, offering a chance to start fresh with a focus on the more important aspects of their music. The album will be the first to be released as The Hats. It will feature deeper, more eclectic lyrical subjects, and more intricate arrangements from singer/songwriter, Patrik Gochez, as well as the lead vocals of keyboardist, Brittany Laine, and lead guitarist, Joey Pierog. Original members, bassist Brenden Harisiades, and drummer, Bobby Rice, offer a rhythm section more solid and creative than ever before.

Originally established as ?Pat & the Hats? in 2012 to support the release of Gochez? chamber-pop debut, Heavy Loader, the band released both a full-length record (Fake it till You Make a Hit 2014) and a follow up EP (Pat & the Hats 2016). They quickly became a regionally recognized name receiving a New England Music Award for ?Best Pop Act? in 2014, a nomination in the same category in 2015, and accolades from regional press outlets in NH, MA, VT and beyond. ?The band has a polyglot of influences, from late ?70s punk-pop to more modern acts like the Flaming Lips, all rooted in classic sensibility? (M. Witthaus The Hippo Press).? The diversity in the indie/pop-rock band?s sound nudged them into a variety of showcases and festivals, sharing bills with Lucius, Lake Street Dive, and the late Charles Bradley. 2018 holds no lack of momentum for the freshly rebranded Hats, as they prepare for the release of their next full-length album.

Prolific singer and songwriter David Ramirez has earned a large and growing following for his soulful, introspective songs and passionate performances. Ramirez grew up in Houston, Texas, where he became interested in music and formed a band with his friends. Influenced by '90s alternative rock, Ramirez's group primarily played parties, but he got hooked on making music, and while attending college in Dallas, he heard an album by Ryan Adams and became fascinated by contemporary folk and influential singer/songwriters of the '60s and '70s, especially Bob Dylan. In Dallas, Ramirez formed a new band and began writing songs that fused pop music with his new lyrical influences, and in 2003 he released his first album, 11503 Lansbury. Two more albums would follow -- 2005's Human and 2007's While Underneath Lights -- before Ramirez chose to break up the band and moved to Nashville to focus on acoustic music.

In 2008, Ramirez traveled to Birmingham, Alabama and cut an EP, simply called Birmingham, that was the first step on his new musical journey. After leaving Nashville for Austin, Texas, Ramirez started touring extensively, playing as often as his circumstances would allow, and as he wrote more songs, he began releasing new material at an impressive rate, cranking out two albums (2009's American Soil and 2012's Apologies) and two EPs (2011's Strangetown and 2013's The Rooster) in the space of five years. Ramirez slowed down a bit after this period, though he still kept up a productive schedule, touring frequently and releasing Fables in early 2016. In December 2016, Ramirez dropped Bootleg Tour 2016, a live album recorded during several concert dates earlier that year. In September 2017, Ramirez returned with a fresh studio album, We're Not Going Anywhere, released through his own Sweetworld label.
